What programs do you offer for beginners?

We offer many comprehensive BJJ Fundamentals classes each week that focus on building a solid foundation in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Our instructors will guide you through fundamental techniques, positions, and concepts in a supportive environment. No prior experience whatsoever is required.

What age groups do you accommodate?

We offer classes for all age groups, from pre-school kids as young as 3 years old to adults of any age. Our programs and curriculums are tailored to the specific needs and abilities of each group, ensuring that everyone receives appropriate training for their skill level and goals.

I’ve never done anything like this before. Is it right for me?

It’s normal to be nervous and we have all been in those shoes. However, we have a wealth of experience from coaching complete beginners to professional competitors so you’ll be in good hands.

Do I need to be in shape before starting BJJ?

No, you don’t need to be in top shape to start. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for everyone, and our classes cater to all fitness levels. As you train, your strength, endurance, and flexibility will naturally improve over time.

How do I get started?

Getting started is easy! Please see our trial page or simply visit us at the gym for a chat and a look around.

What should I wear to my first class?

We will happily loan you a gi and belt for your trial class. If one of your trial classes is Nogi Jiu Jitsu then please try to wear a t-shirt or rashguard and a pair of shorts without any zips or pockets.

We also sell a range of high quality Roger Gracie Academy training kit within the gym.

How often should I train?

We recommend training at least two to three times per week to see steady progress. However, we offer flexible schedules, and you’re welcome to train as often as your personal schedule allows.

Are your instructors certified and experienced?

Absolutely. We’re proud to have three competitive black belt coaches, alongside several decorated and experienced purple and blue belts, between them holding multiple titles and achievements. Our coaching team is exceptional, both in skill and character. Beyond their expertise, they are warm, approachable, and committed to making everyone feel welcome, whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner. We believe these qualities shine in our Junior BJJ class, where it’s essential not only to provide disciplined and educational instruction but also to foster a strong rapport between the kids and their coach, ensuring they enjoy and look forward to every session.

All of our coaches have a full DBS check.

What makes your gym different from other BJJ academies?

We have a huge state of the art facilities equipped with 150m² of Zebra Pro 50mm mats, a large weights/S&C area, a large premium sauna and a multi-person ice bath.

We pride ourselves on fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone—from total beginners to advanced competitors—feels at home. Our focus on both the physical and mental aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ensures that you’ll not only develop your skills but also build confidence, discipline, and mindfulness. Can I compete if I train at your gym?

Absolutely! Although there is no pressure to do so, we actively support students who wish to compete and offer specialized competition training. Whether you’re interested in local, national, or international competitions, our coaches can prepare you at every level.

I’m worried about rolling/sparring. Is it compulsory?

No absolutely not. However, once you have enough experience we do encourage it as we believe that it is a valuable tool to learn and improve and is one of many things that separates BJJ from many other non-effective martial arts.

Although we are a legit academy, we have a strong policy on rolling and we do not tolerate any bullying of any kind. We are actually very proud of the friendly atmosphere that we have cultivated here at the gym, particularly the fact that members are so helpful and accommodating to beginners.

Do you offer open mat sessions?

Yes, RGA Bedford is open 7 days a week. Please see our timetable. If there’s not a class on then it’s an open mat . These are open to all members and provide an opportunity for additional practice, drilling, or sparring with fellow students in a more informal setting.

Can I bring a friend or family member to try?

Yes! All friends and family are welcome to try. They can take advantage of our trial class offer and experience firsthand what BJJ training is like. It’s a great way to introduce someone to the sport in a friendly, welcoming environment.

Is BJJ suitable for women?

Absolutely! Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great martial art for women, as it focuses on using technique and leverage to overcome strength and size. Many women find BJJ empowering and an excellent form of self-defence. We are very proud of the female to male ratio her at RGA Bedford and we think this is a testament to the atmosphere and philosophy of the gym.

Do you offer seminars?

Yes, we regularly host seminars and special training events featuring high-level instructors and world-class BJJ athletes. These events provide an opportunity to learn advanced techniques and concepts, network with other practitioners, and deepen your understanding of BJJ from some of the worlds best!

We also aim to have the GOAT, Roger Gracie, down a few times a year. This sessions aren’t to missed!

What are the gym’s safety and hygiene protocols?

We prioritize safety and hygiene in all our classes. Mats and equipment are thoroughly cleaned with quaternary amine disinfectant, and we require all students to maintain proper hygiene, including wearing clean gear and trimming nails. Additionally, we have protocols in place to ensure safe training practices and minimize injuries.

Do you have a Child Protection Policy?

Yes all our staff are DBS checked and we have a written policy on which all staff are trained.

Are you insured?

Yes, all coaches and areas of the facility are insured.

Do you offer private lessons?

Unfortunately not at the moment. Currently, as we haven’t long had our new premises, we are all too focused on building Roger Gracie Academy Bedford into the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym ever. This may well change in the future.
